Problem Solved: Creating Premium Gift Voucher Books for The Living Room Cinema

Gift vouchers are a powerful tool for businesses in the hospitality and entertainment sectors. They drive revenue, attract new customers, and make excellent gifts. But while many businesses focus on the design, the real challenge often lies in how the vouchers are physically produced.
This was exactly the case when we worked with The Living Room Cinema on a bespoke gift voucher solution.
The brief wasn’t just to print vouchers, it was to solve how they should work, feel, and be presented as a finished product.
The Problem: Finding the Right Voucher Format
The initial challenge was deciding on the most suitable format.
The Living Room Cinema wanted something that felt premium enough to be given as a gift, but also practical for day-to-day use. They also needed a format that would allow multiple vouchers to be issued in a structured way, without losing quality or usability.
During our initial meeting, we presented several proven voucher formats:
Loose individual vouchers
Standard padded voucher books
Padded and perforated voucher books (cheque-book style)
Each option had strengths, but also limitations. Loose vouchers can be simple but lack structure. Standard padded books offer organisation but not easy tear-out functionality. Perforated books add usability, but require careful planning in design and production.
After reviewing the options, the client chose a padded and perforated voucher book, the best solution for combining practicality with a premium feel.
The Hidden Problem: Artwork That Needs to Work in Print
Once the format was decided, the next challenge emerged, ensuring the supplied artwork would actually work in production.
While the design looked strong visually, voucher books introduce technical considerations that are often overlooked during initial artwork creation.
Because the vouchers were being padded and perforated, there was a risk that important elements such as text, voucher values, or branding could be too close to the edge or fall within areas affected by binding or tearing.
We carried out a full artwork review and provided guidance to ensure:
All critical information remained within safe zones
Nothing important would be lost during perforation or padding
The layout would still function cleanly when individual vouchers were removed
This stage is crucial in preventing production issues and ensuring the final product performs as intended.
The Design Solution: Adding a Wrap-Around Cover
During the production planning stage, we identified another opportunity to improve the final product, the addition of a wrap-around front cover.
This solved two key problems:
1. Elevating the Presentation
Gift vouchers are often purchased as presents, meaning first impressions matter. A wrap-around cover transforms the product from a simple booklet into a more polished, gift-ready item.
2. Hiding Structural Elements
Voucher books are typically secured with staples to hold the voucher stubs in place. Without a cover, these staples can be visible and detract from the overall finish.
The wrap-around cover neatly conceals these staples, resulting in a much cleaner and more professional appearance.
It’s a small change that makes a significant difference to the perceived quality of the final product.
The Outcome: A Functional, Premium Voucher System
Once artwork adjustments were completed and finishing decisions confirmed, the voucher books were produced as padded and perforated units with a wrap-around cover.
The final product delivered on all requirements:
Easy-to-use tear-out vouchers
Retained stub system for tracking
Clean, professional presentation
Premium gift-ready appearance
Most importantly, the solution worked both visually and operationally — solving the original brief rather than just fulfilling it.

Why This Matters
This project highlights a common issue in print production: what looks good on screen doesn’t always translate directly into a finished product.
Without proper planning, things like padding, perforation, and finishing methods can compromise a design. By addressing these factors early, we were able to prevent issues before they occurred and improve the final outcome.
Final Thoughts
The Living Room Cinema project is a strong example of how thoughtful print consultation can transform a design into a fully functional product.
From selecting the right format, to reviewing artwork, to refining finishing details like the wrap-around cover, every stage contributed to solving the core challenge: creating a gift voucher system that is both practical and premium.
If you're planning gift vouchers, ticket books, or any bespoke print product, getting the production right from the start makes all the difference, and that’s exactly where we come in.
